LAIA Chem Expo 2001
|
This week, November 4-10, is National Chemistry Week. During the week, members of the
American Chemical Society (ACS) will pay special tribute to the science of chemistry.
This year's theme, "Celebrating Chemistry and Art" will recognize some
of chemistry's contributions to the advancement of the arts. From providing the
restoration materials used to preserve historical artwork to creating new chromatic
colors, chemistry is an integral part of art.
The main activity slated locally for National Chemistry Week is the annual LAIA Chem
Expo. The Expo will offer hands-on chemistry demonstrations to every 6th grader
in Calcasieu Parish later this week. Made possible through the collective efforts LAIA
member companies, McNeese State University and the Southwest Louisiana chapter of the ACS,
the Chem Expo has received national recognition.
At the ACS Annual Meeting recently held in Atlanta, the LAIA Chem Expo 2000 received
the Phoenix Award for Greatest Industrial Involvement. The award recognizes the local ACS
section that generated the greatest amount of support through industrial organizations,
their employees, and/or their financial support. Nearly 450 volunteers participated in the
Expo, which reached more than 2,600 students.
The mission of the annual NCW celebration is to reach the public, especially elementary
and secondary school children, with positive messages about chemistry and make a positive
change in the public's impression of chemistry.
